The condition that exists when the basic
needs of human beings (shelter, food and
clothing) are not being met. In many
countries, poverty is common and persistent,
being reflected in poor nutrition, low life
expectancy, and high levels of infant
mortality. It may result from a country's
complete lack of resources, and an inability
to achieve economic development. Many
different definitions of poverty exist, since
there is little agreement on the standard of
living (known as the poverty level)
considered to be the minimum adequate level
by the majority of people.
