  1. The condition that exists when the basic
  2. needs of human beings (shelter, food and
  3. clothing) are not being met. In many
  4. countries, poverty is common and persistent,
  5. being reflected in poor nutrition, low life
  6. expectancy, and high levels of infant
  7. mortality. It may result from a country's
  8. complete lack of resources, and an inability
  9. to achieve economic development. Many
  10. different definitions of poverty exist, since
  11. there is little agreement on the standard of
  12. living (known as the poverty level)
  13. considered to be the minimum adequate level
  14. by the majority of people.
